The workshop will cover the goals of the program, and the three components of a CAREER proposal (intellectual merit, educational plan, and broader impacts). It will discuss common mistakes that faculty make, a suggested timeline for drafting the proposal, and how to make your proposal stand out.
In addition, for HDSI, CSE, ECE and CogSci faculty that adhere to the suggested timeline, Dr. Pazzani will review a draft of your proposal and provide suggestions for improving the proposal.

Bio:
Michael Pazzani joined UCSD/HDSI in the summer of 2019. Prior to UCSD, he was Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at UC Riverside. During his time at UCR, Riverside received more NSF CAREER awards than any other UC campus. He was also Vice President of Research and Economic Development at Rutgers University which had a 50% acceptance rate for career proposals to NSF. Prior to Rutgers, he was a division director of CISE/Information and Intelligent Systems where over 4 years, the division reviewed approximately 8000 proposals and awarded approximately $1B in grants. He has seen nearly every mistake possible in NSF proposals as well as many examples of well-written, innovative proposals.
