Department of Cognitive Science
Associate director de Sa is a leader in the fields of cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, and data science. Her research utilizes a numerous increase understanding of how humans learn to perceive the world around them.
Her methods harness the computational properties of machine learning algorithms, and also investigate what physiological recordings and the constraints and limitations of human performance reveal about how our brains learn. She\'s seen great progress toward methods developed for people with impairments like brainstem-affecting strokes, and neurodegenerative diseases like ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). She earned her Ph.D. and master\'s in Computer Science from the University of Rochester, and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Engineering from Canada\'s Queen\'s University.
